今回気になった表現は pay out of (one’s) (own) pocket です。日本語でも「ポケットマネーで」と言いますので、あまり気にしませんでした。でも、pocketの意味を上手くつかめていないと感じ、調べました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で意味を引いてみると「自腹を切って払う」とありました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) では"pay for something with one’s own money, rather than from a particular fund or account"と定義されています。

私が最初に気になったpocketの使い方ですが、ここでは「所持金、資金」という意味で用いられています。同じ用法の例としてan empty pocket「無一文（の人）」have deep pockets「十分な富がある」が一緒に載っていました。ちなみに『リーダーズ英和辞典』によるとout of pocket単体では「金がなくて、資金不足で、損をして、不在で、いなくて」という意味になります。

今後社会の高齢化が進むにつれて、介護政策がより重要視され、注目を浴びていくのではないでしょうか。高齢化する(gray)を以前ブログで取り上げているので、そちらも併せて確認してみてください。(ko-chi)
