今回気になった単語はvicinity /vəsínəṭi/ です。はじめにこの語を見たときに意味を文脈から「上空」と予想しました。この訳で違和感なく読むことができたのであまり気にしていませんでしたが、読み終わった後に念のため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で確認したところ〔of〕を伴って「〔…の〕近所、近辺、付近、周辺」とありました。予想は見事に間違ってました。
さらに同辞書にはin the vicinity ofで「…の近くに」「〔おおげさに〕(数量・金額・年月などが)およそ…で〔の〕(about)という意味が載っています。例文としてI paid in the vicinity of one million yen for that one.とありました。「近所、近辺」と聞くと真っ先に思いつくのがneighborhoodという単語だと思います。しかしこの二つの単語には日本語訳には表れない意味の差異があります。同書には「vicinityの方がneighborhoodより堅い語で通例広い範囲をいう」と書かれています。
Dictionary.comではvicinityは"the area or region near or about a place; surrounding district; neighborhood"と定義され、neighborhoodは"the area or region around or near some place or thing; vicinity"と定義されていました。
もし25日に東京周辺へ車で出かけるという人がいれば頭に入れておいた方がいいかもしれません。(ko-chi)
