comb throughを取りあげます。直訳すると「櫛でとかす」となりますが、combのみを『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）でひくと「（場所）を（求めて）徹底的に捜査する」とありました。よって“combed through the rubble of collapsed buildings”で「建物のがれきをくまなく捜査する」となります。さらにfine-tooth(ed) comb（目の細かい櫛）をつけた“go over O with a fine-tooth(ed) comb”はLDOCEで“to examine something very carefully and thoroughly”と定義されているように「Oを入念に捜査する」を表します。
