‘Shogi’ whiz Fujii sets another record as he climbs the ranks
Setting “shogi” records has become second nature for teen phenom Sota Fujii.
The 15-year-old became the first junior high school student to reach the rank of 5-dan following his victory on Feb. 1 over Hirotaka Kajiura, 22.
They were facing off in a lower league competition that eventually reaches the Meijin title, considered the most prestigious shogi title.
It was Fujii’s ninth straight win in the lower league competition, assuring him of having one of the three best records with one match still to play.
The shogi players with the three best records in Group Two of the C Level are promoted to Group One of the C Level. Promotion to Group One automatically makes a player a 5-dan.

またwhizz-kidで“A young person who is outstandingly skillful or successful at something.”(神童)となることがわかりました(同上英英辞典より)。 (flying bird)
