昨年11月アメリカ・テキサス州のサザースプリングスで起きた銃乱射事件により重傷を負った少年がおよそ2ヶ月ぶりに自身が所属する教会を訪れました。
A little boy who was shot in the Sutherland Springs, Texas, church massacre arrived home today -- riding through town on a firetruck -- after more than two months in the hospital.
On Nov. 5, a gunman stormed the rural First Baptist Church, leaving 26 dead, according to police, who have included an unborn child in the death count. The attack was deemed the worst mass shooting in Texas history.

"I met with her and talked to her then I was actually able to go to the hospital and see him for the first time," about a week after the shooting, Duncan said.
"He was heavily sedated," Duncan said, going through "surgery after surgery."

“sedate” /sɪdéɪt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「落ち着いた、真面目な、物静かな」といった形容詞的な意味を伴い、また他動詞で「(鎮静剤を投与させ) 黙らせる、静かにさせる」といった意味があるといえます。次に英英辞典をみると “avoiding excitement or greatactivity and usually calm andrelaxed” あるいは “to cause a person or animal to be very calm or go to sleep by giving them a drug” とあり、何かに邪魔されず穏やかに行動できる様や睡眠導入剤などを用いて人などを落ち着かせる様を表しているといえます。さらに “sedate” はラテン語で「座って考える、一旦座る」といった意義のある “sedere” から派生してできた語であることがわかりました。
“sedate” は「気を静めさせる」と「落ち着いて行動する」という二つのニュアンスを含むことがわかりました。そこで「落ち着いた」という意義がある語の中で「落ち着いた上で行動に移す」といった意を他に含む語に “calm” が挙げられることがわかります。また、「落ち着いた」といった意義を持つ語の中で「気を静める」という 意味を含む他の語に“soothing” があげられることが言えます。
このサザースプリングスの人口は2017年時点で600人程度しかいない小さな村であるため、この無差別テロか起こった当時はは「家族の一員が犠牲になった気がして非常に悲しい。」と現地住民は語っていたそうです。(Hapidra)
