close-knitを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「綿密に結びついた，密接に組織された」と載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、“bound together by strong relationships and common interests”と定義されております。
-knit（過去分詞）の形でで「ひきしまった；団結した」という意味があり、close-knitは後者です。前者はwell-knitで、 “a well-knit frame”で「引き締まった体格」のように用いることができます。
