　金井宣茂さんを乗せたロシアの宇宙船"ソユーズ"が、日本時間の17日午後4時21分に打ち上げられ、午後4時半ごろ予定どおりの軌道に入り、打ち上げは成功しました。

Astronaut Kanai set for start of 6-month mission aboard ISS

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan--Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai lifted off on his maiden flight on Dec. 17 for a six-month mission at the International Space Station (ISS) where he will study the effects of weightlessness in space.

At a news conference the previous day, the 41-year-old said he is looking forward to the launch as a new beginning for the crew and an extended stay allowing for new experiences in space.

　“weightlessness”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、“weightless”で「(宇宙や水中での)無重力の；重力を感じない」とありました。“weightlessness”は名詞形です。“weight”「重さ」が“less”「ない」という形なので、覚えやすいのではないかと思います。確認のためにLDOCEを引いたところ、“something that is weightless seems to have no weight, especially when it is floating in space or water”とありました。ちなみに、「重力」を表現するものとして、“zero gravity”や“agravity”があります。(Blue Sky)
