“the green light” を取り上げます。直訳すると「緑の光」となり、そこから「信号の青信号」に何か関わりがないかと連想できるでしょう。
詳しく調べてみると “the green light” は「信号の青」の「通行が可能、動き出していい」というニュアンスから派生して「計画などをはじめていいという認可、ゴーサイン」を表すとわかりました。ちなみに「ゴーサインを出す、認可を与える」などと動詞で表現したい場合は “give” を用いて “give the green light” と表せます。
これと対に表現される語は “red light” あるいは “red line” です。直訳すると「赤信号」、「赤い線」となり、そこから「危険信号」、「危険水域」というニュアンスを抱くことができるでしょう。したがってこれらの語は、「これ以上はできない」や「越えてはいけない一線」を無理矢理に実行したりした際に警戒や注意を促す場面で用いられることがいえます。
