NAHA--Prosecutors on Nov. 24 demanded a life sentence for a former U.S. Marine charged with raping and murdering a 20-year-old Okinawan woman, during his high-profile trial here, in a case that inflamed anti-U.S. military sentiments.
Prosecutors argued at the Naha District Court that Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, 33, admitted after his arrest to having stabbed the company employee in the back of her neck with a knife.

“life sentence”を取り上げます。“sentence”に「判決、刑」という意味があることはよく知られています。今回の記事は裁判に関する物なので、これは誰でもわかると思います。また、“life”には「一生、生涯」という意味があります。ここまでわかれば“life sentence”が何を指すかわかる人も多いと思います。「英辞郎 on the WEB」には、法律用語で「終身刑」とありました。同義語である「無期懲役」と訳しても問題ないと思います。ちなみに、LDOCEでは“the punishment of being in prison for the rest of your life”と定義されていました。
