SUMO/ Harumafuji apologizes for drunk beating of fellow wrestler

FUKUOKA--Yokozuna Harumafuji on Nov. 14 apologized for a drunken beating of a fellow Mongolian sumo wrestler that fractured his skull, caused a concussion and forced him to miss the grand tournament here.

The beating occurred on Oct. 26 during a training-promotional event for the sport. The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) is investigating the incident.

　“concussion”/kənkˈʌʃən/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「脳震盪」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“a small amount of damage to the brain that makes you lose consciousness or feel sick for a short time, usually caused by something hitting your head”と定義されています。動詞の形の“concuss”には「…を激しく揺さぶる；気絶させる〚be ~ed〛脳震盪を起こしている；気絶している」という意味があります。脳震盪は頭が揺さぶられて起きるものなので、そこから「脳震盪」という意味はきているのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
