dinar/dɪnάɚ/を取り上げます。まずこの記事の見出しが“People for sale: Where lives are auctioned for $400”とあるので上記の内容はオークションでの値段の取引であることがわかります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと、「ディナール《イラク・イラン・アルジェリア・チュニジアなどの通貨単位》」とあります。Cambridge Dictionary では“the standard unit of money used in various countries in Western Asia and North Africa”と定義されていました。
dinarは定義にあるように、西アジアと南アフリカで使用されていますが、それぞれ独自で発行しているため価値はことなるようです。他にもなかなか聞くことがない通貨単位を少し紹介します。マダガスカルではariary「アリアリ」、ベトナムはdong「ドン」、ポーランドはzłoty「ズウォティ」などがあります。
