“the run-up to”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「≪…への≫準備段階[期間]≪to≫」とありました。また、LDOCEを引いたところ、“the period of time just before an important event”と定義されています。「準備」というと“prepare”などもあるので、何が違うのか気になり、調べてみました。インターネット上のMerriam-Websterで検索をかけたところ、“a period immediately preceding an action or event”と定義されていました。また、句動詞の“run up”には「≪…に/…の背後に≫駆け寄る、すばやく近づく≪to / behind≫」という意味があります。これらの定義からわかるように、“run-up”は近い将来に開催されるイベントなどに向けての急ぎの作業を指すのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
