arbitrate 復習

　アメリカのトランプ大統領はベトナムを訪問し、中国とベトナムの間で緊張が走る南シナ海を巡る攻防の仲裁的役割を担うと言及しました。

US President Donald Trump has offered Asia his services as a mediator, shortly after tweeting insults.

At the start of a meeting in Hanoi with the Vietnamese president, Mr Trump said he could help arbitrate the regional South China Sea dispute, which includes Vietnam and China.

"I'm a very good mediator and arbitrator," he said.

It came shortly after he called NorthKorea's Kim Jong-un "short and fat" on Twitter.

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims to territory in the South China Sea.

"If I can help mediate or arbitrate, please let me know," Mr Trump told his Vietnamese counterpart, Tran DaiQuang.

　“arbitrate” /ˈɑːr.bə.treɪt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によれば「仲裁する、仲を取り持つ」という意味があるといえます。次に英英辞典をみると、 “to make a judgment in anargument, usually because asked to do so by those involved”と定義されていてある対象の中に入って双方の意見から客観的に物事を判断する様を表しているとわかります。
　“arbitrate” はもともとラテン語で「判断する」という意義のある “arbitor” からきていることがわかりました。また “arbitor” から同じく派生してできたものに “arbitrary” という語があります。しかし、“arbitrary” の意味を引くと「強気な、任意の」といったニュアンスがあるとわかります。英英辞典をみると、“based on chance rather than being planned or basedon reason” と予め用意したものでなくその場で基づいたものを重視する様を指しているといえます。これは両者の言い分をきちんと客観視して判断する “arbitrate” に対して、“arbitrary”は、そのときの自分の感情や気紛れで物事を判断する様を表したためこのようなニュアンスになったそうです。綴りが似ていて同じ語から派生したものですが、意義が異なるため混合しないように使い分けをしたいですね。
　今回のトランプ大統領のベトナム訪問のため行われた2国間会議では他にも経済連携や北朝鮮情勢についても協力体制を築くことで合意なされたそうです。(Hapidra)
