　以前, 東京五輪 (2020) のエンブレム仕様となった「市松模様」を指すcheckered / tʃɛkərd / を取り上げましたが, 本文では異なる意で用いられており, 改めて調べました。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社) によると, 上記のほか「色とりどりの」「変化に富んだ」とありました。 “a checkered career” で「波乱に富んだ人生」となります。

さらにMerriam-Webster.comで確認したところ, “marked by many problems or failures” と定義されていました。類義語には “uneven”, “irregular” などが挙げられ, 同じく “live a varied life” 「多彩な生涯を送る」のように表すことができます(Dictionary.com)。(Cayu)
