Nadal quits Paris with knee injury

Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Paris Masters before his quarterfinal with a knee injury on Friday, which could also rule the 16-time Grand Slam champion out of the season-ending World Tour Finals.

World No. 1 Nadal, who has suffered from knee and wrist injuries throughout his career, decided to withdraw on Friday morning after having his right knee strapped during his third-round win over Pablo Cuevas.

He did not say if he would be fit for the Tour Finals in London later this month.

　strapを取り上げます。ひもやシートベルトなどで縛るという意味がまず浮かびますが、ここでは他の意味を表していると考えられます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1（…）を革ひもで縛る、とめる、（シートベルトなどで動かないように）固定する（in, into） 2（しばしば受身で）（英）（傷口に）包帯を巻く（up） （米）tape」とありました。テーピングをして試合に臨んでいたと捉えることができるかと思います。

　LDOCEには “to fasten something or someone in place with one or more straps” や “to tie bandages firmly round a part of your body that has been hurt” と定義されています。

　12日からロンドンでATPツアー・ファイナルが行われますが、出場できるかどうかはまだわかっていません。以前のブログでは、お金に困っている状況を表すcash-strappedという表現が取り上げられています。（aqua）
