Live-action adaptations of anime seem to be the latest Hollywood trend as“Your Name” has just been announced to be in development from J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures.

Your Name wasn’t just a hit among critics, but a huge financial success as well, raking in over $355.2 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.“Your Name”held the top spot in the Japanese box office for 12 non-consecutive weeks. However, it seems like it came and went without much fanfare in the United States, grossing merely $5 million dollars domestically, slightly lower than Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises. But perhaps this latest announcement could ignite curiosity in the U.S. and prompt people to catch the original Japanese animated film.

取り上げるのは“fanfare”/fˈænfeɚ/です。「ファンファーレ」からトランペットなどの金管楽器による華やかで目立つものが想像できます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で確認すると「派手な誇示；宣伝、広告」、“with much fanfare”で「鳴り物入りで」とありました。WeblioやOxford living dictionaryではフランス語が語源とされているようですが、Online etymology dictionaryによると、さらにさかのぼってスペイン語で「自慢屋」、イタリア語で「小児の話す音やおしゃべり」、アラビア語の「おしゃべり」なども関係してくるそうで、どれも騒がしい印象を受けます。
また、『ブルーワー英語故事成語大辞典』（大修館）では関連語として“fanfaron”/fǽnfərɑ`n/「威張り散らして自分をひけらかす臆病者」が記載されており、スコットランドでは軍人の身に付ける金の糸を指して「派手な服装」を表す際に使ったそうです。また、そこから「空威張り」の“fanfaronade”が生まれました。
実写版の製作には、オリジナルでも携わった川村元気氏もプロデューサーとして参加するそうです。日本らしい景色などがハリウッド版ではどのようにリメイクされるのか気になります。(flying bird)
