Mt. Ontakesan eruption victims honored on 3rd anniversary
OTAKI, Nagano Prefecture--A cenotaph was unveiled to honor the 63 people killed or left missing in the eruption of Mount Ontakesan on the third anniversary of the disaster Sept. 27.
An unveiling ceremony at the foot of the volcano was attended by about 100 bereaved family members of the victims. Five of the bodies have not been recovered.

“cenotaph”/sénət`æf/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(戦没者の)記念碑」とありました。LDOCEでは“a monument built to remind people of soldiers, sailors etc who were killed in a war and are buried somewhere else”と定義されています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』では戦没者のための慰霊碑だとありましたが、LDOCEの定義によるとその他の慰霊碑もこの単語で表現することができるようです。ちなみに、この単語の語源はギリシャ語の“kenotáphion”にあり、“kenós”「空(から)の」と“táphos”「墓」という意味があるそうです(goo辞書)。これは、慰霊碑が埋葬地とは別の場所に建てることから「空の」という単語がギリシャ語の“kenotaphion”には含まれています。“cenotaph”にもこのニュアンスは残っています。
