Kansai sake brewers revamp operations for overseas tourists

Sake breweries in the Kansai region are tearing down language barriers, expanding facilities and helping guests avoid taxes to widen the stream of tourists from abroad.

The industry is looking to tantalize overseas tourists’ tastebuds as domestic consumption of sake has fallen steadily to one-third of the level from 40 years ago

Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewing Co. in Kobe set up a facility near its headquarters to show how sake is produced in casks. Visitors will also be able to watch craftsmen building casks from Japanese cedar wood and bamboo.

The facility, Kiku-Masamune Taru Sake Meister Factory, will open in late November for 40 visitors daily, although the number will later increase, according to the company.

　語源を探してみると、goo辞書ではTANTALUS+-IZEとあり、Tantalusにizeが合わさってできた言葉であることがわかりました。上記の英和辞典でTantalusを引くと「（ギリシャ神話）タンタロス（ゼウスの息子；神々の秘密を漏らしたために地獄の水にあごまでつけられ、水を飲もうとすると水は退き、頭上の果実を取ろうとするとそれも退いて苦しめられた）」と説明されています。この話を受けて、目の前に欲しいものがあるのに手に入れることができないというところから、じらされるという上記の意味を表すようになったようです。（aqua）
