A renowned tourist destination here was emptied temporarily on Sept. 23 for the disposal of an unexploded U.S. bomb from the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.

The Ground Self-Defense Force’s bomb disposal squad removed the 50-kilogram bomb from a hotel construction site near the Kokusai-dori main street in central Naha.

The area was closed down for about an hour from 10:20 a.m., and about 2,500 people living in a radius of 166 meters were evacuated to the Naha municipal government building.

　dud /dˈʌd/ を取り上げます。文脈から考えて、残骸という意味を予想しました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと「1（略式）役に立たない人（物）　2（略式）（こっけいに）服」とありました。しかしこれらの意味ではしっくりときません。Merriam-Websterで他の意味を探してみると、 “a bomb or missile that fails to explode” と説明されており、不発弾という意味もあることがわかりました。

　語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べると “"person in ragged clothing," from duds (q.v.). Sense extended by 1897 to "counterfeit thing," and 1908 to "useless, inefficient person or thing." This led naturally in World War I to "shell which fails to explode,"” と「使えないもの」という意味が戦争の時代において「爆発しなかった砲弾」を表すようになったようです。（aqua）
