“mover and shaker”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』で引いたところ、「(政財界の)有力者」とありました。LDOCEでは“informal an important person who has power and influence over what happens in a situation”と定義されています。どうしてこのような意味になるのかをインターネットで検索したところ、「英次郎 on the WEB」に「人を動かして（move）揺さぶる（shake）ことのできる人」という説明がありました。さらに、「一般的には単に人を統率する能力があるだけでなく、何らかの優れたアイデアを基に他人を賛同させて動かす人のことを言う。」と説明されていました。ちなみに、“mover”には「売れる商品」や「株が大量に売買されている会社」という意味もあるそうです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。これらの定義も世を動かす力がある、というところから生まれた語義なのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
