 高騰する医療費を抑えようとする日本の努力は、アメリカとの貿易摩擦を拡大させているようです。

While the U.S. Commerce Department sees Japan’s drug market, the world’s third largest, as the top near-term growth opportunity for its pharmaceutical exporters, the view from Tokyo is of crippling medical bills as the ranks of the elderly swell and the working-age population declines.

 “crippling”を取り上げます。ジーニアス英和辞典を引くと、「(損害・ストなどが)深刻な影響を与える、(債務などが)甚大な」「(病気・障害が)体を不自由にさせる」とありました。またLDOCEには”cripple”で、”to hurt someone badly so that they cannot walk properly” “to damage something badly so that it no longer works or is no longer effective”と定義されていました。ここでは、甚大な医療提案といった訳でしょうか。

 元々の”cripple”の語源は”creep”と同じで、「這う」から派生し「(人)の手足をきかなくさせる」や「歩けなくさせる」といった意味を持つ語として知られています。
関連して体の障害に関する表現を少し取り上げます。「片足の悪い」は”one leg”というと差別的になってしまうので”lame”というようです。(MMF
