Hurricane Irma has caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean, reducing buildings to rubble and leaving at least nine people dead.

　今回取り上げるのは、“catastrophe” /kətˈæstrəfi/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「大災害、破局、大失敗」といった意味があり、今回の文脈に沿ってみると「大災害」と訳すのが望ましいといえます。
　ところで、「災害、災難」といったニュアンスを持つ単語は他にもあります。そこで今回は、”catastrophe”の類義語と比較していきたいと思います。
　まず、“catastrophe”の定義を英英辞典で見てみると、”an extremely bad event that causes a lot of suffering or destruction”からも分かるようにたくさんの物や人々が犠牲になる甚大且つ、突発的な出来事を指していると解釈することができます。
　次に同じく「災害、災難」という意義を持つ“disaster” は“a calamitous event, especially one occurring suddenly and causing great loss of life, damage, or hardship, as a flood, airplane crash, or business failure”と定義されていて、地震や豪雨などの災害だけでなく日々の暮らしの中で起こる様々な損失、損害を表しているとみることができます。
　さらに、上の二つの語と似た意を指す“calamitous”は “a serious accident or bad event causing damage or suffering”と定義され、人々や物を傷つけたり、苦しめたりする悲惨な出来事を説明した語であると考えられます。よって、同じ「災害、災難」に意義を持っている単語であっても、文脈やその程度によって、使い分けがなされることが分かりました。今回のハリケーンで、特に被害の大きかったプエルトリコではこれまでに７人の方がなくなり、住民の半数以上の世帯で停電が発生しているそうです。(Hapidra)
