JAL plane makes emergency landing after suspected bird strike
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A Japan Airlines plane bound for New York made an emergency landing at Tokyo's Haneda airport on Tuesday due to engine trouble apparently stemming from a bird strike, the transport ministry and airline operator said.
Flames were briefly seen coming from the left engine of the Boeing 777, which had departed the airport shortly after 11 a.m., according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

“stem from”を取り上げます。“stem”は「茎、幹」という意味でよく知られていますが、今回は異なる意味で用いられています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、“stem from A”で「A〈物・事〉に起因する、由来する；Aから始まる、生じる」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to develop as a result of something else”と定義されています。この“stem”は動詞なので少し使い方は異なりますが、意味的には“due to”や“because of”と似ているのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
