nirvana 復習
皆さんは人生が変わるような「贈り物」をもらった事はありますか。この動画はそんな「贈り物」をもらった一人の女性の生活や考え方、人生そのものが、どのように変化したのかを語ったものです。

Before watching a video in which Stacey talks about her life-changing story, familiarize yourself with the following entries:
acquaintance - a person that you have met but do not know well
adoration - very strong love or worship for someone
admiration – having high opinion, approval and respect for someone or something
recalibrate - make corrections or major changes
gourmet - very high or very special quality of food/ drink
truckload – a large amount of something (that can be carried by a truck)
vitality - energy and strength
humble – having or showing that one is not very important, unassuming
serenity - peaceful and calm; worried by nothing
nirvana - a place or state characterized by freedom from or oblivion to pain, worry, and the external world. In Buddhism, it is the highest state of consciousness, in which the soul is freed from all desires and attachments. Colloquially, the word is used to express the highest level of peaceful happiness.

動画サイトTEDから表現を拾いました。今回気になったのは、“nirvana” /nɪɚvάːnə/ です。辞書を引くと「涅槃、解脱」「(苦痛からの)脱却、忘却、至福、極楽(の境地)」とありました(『ジーニアス英和辞典』)。「吹き消すこと、消滅」を意味するサンスクリット語が語源だそうです。
先生からは1983年に沖雅也さんという大分県出身の俳優が「おやじ、涅槃で待ってる」という遺言を残して亡くなったときに、このことばが話題になったということをお聞きしました。
どんな状況下でも、発想を変えて、違う視点から物事を捉えることで、得るものや大事なものに気づくことが出来るということを学びました。(MMF)
