Retired police go on tourist patrol at Rome's Trevi Fountain

ROME (AP) - Retired traffic officers at Rome's Trevi Fountain are working to keep tourists on good behavior.
The Italian city's mayor signed an order last month aimed at protecting Trevi and some 40 other historic fountains. The order prescribes stiff fines for climbing, sitting or eating on the monuments.
Several former police officers started shooing tourists off the stone rim of the Trevi Fountain on Tuesday. They reminded people not to eat there and to keep an open path through the crowds.

　“shoo off”をとりあげます。前回Gomezさんが予想していたように、“shoo”から追い払いう意味合いで使われていることがわかります。

　「シッと追い払う」の“shoo”に「ある場所から向こうへ」を表す前置詞の“off”が付くことで泉の縁に座った観光客に「立ち退かす」ようなイメージがわいてきます。

警察は笛を使って警告をしていますが飲食や縁に座ることを禁止する看板は立っておらず、急に注意を受けた観光客は不満を漏らしているそうです。しかし、他にも水浴びをするなど、マナーのなっていない客は多く、警備の強化はやむを得ない状況のようです。(flying bird)
