bark up the wrong tree 復習

辞書で調べものをしていた際に、 “bark up the wrong tree”というイディオムを見つけたのでご紹介いたします。

ジーニアス英和辞典』(第5版,大修館)には、「見当違いなことをする,お門違いの非難をする」と載っております。Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)では、 "be pursuing a mistaken or misguided line of thought or course of action"と定義されております。

なぜこのような表現がうまれたのか気になったので、インターネットで検索いたしました。すると以下のような記述をみつけました。狩猟犬が木を獲物と思い込み、誤って吠えることが由来のようです。

The origin of the idiom 'barking up the wrong tree' dates back to early 1800s America, when hunting with packs of dogs was very popular. The term was used literally at first, when wily prey animals such as raccoons would trick dogs into believing they were up a certain tree when in fact they had escaped. Thus, dogs barking at the base of an empty tree were said to be “barking up the wrong tree.”
