　野良猫に噛まれたことでマダニが媒介する感染症にかかり、女性が死亡していたことがわかりました。

Woman bitten by cat dies of tick-borne disease

A woman in western Japan died of a tick-borne viral illness last year after being bitten by a sick stray cat, according to the health ministry and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.

The woman, in her 50s, developed a severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, or SFTS, in summer last year and died 10 days later, the ministry and the institute said Monday.

Humans bitten by ixodid ticks, which inhabit forests and grass fields, may be infected with the SFTS virus, and infections have been reported in Japan, China and South Korea. There has been no confirmed case of a human contracting the disease via an animal, however.

The early stages of SFTS infection are characterized by symptoms such as high fever and arthritis pain. Impairment of consciousness can occur in five to six days, and the sufferer’s general condition worsens in a week or two. There is only supportive care for the disease.

　LDOCEには “a disease that causes the joints of your body to become swollen and very painful” と定義されています。

　今回のケースのように、動物から人への感染事例は初めて確認されたとのことです。直接マダニに噛まれるだけではなく、動物を媒介して感染する可能性があるということを覚えておかなくてはならないと思いました。（aqua）
