CHICAGO (Reuters) — China officials have agreed to allow imports of U.S. rice for the first time ever, U.S. Agriculture Department Secretary Sonny Perdue said Thursday.
The move would give U.S. farmers access to the world’s biggest rice consumer, with China importing about 5 million tons last year, Perdue said in a statement.

China last month resumed imports of U.S. beef for the first time since 2003. Last week, Chinese buyers inked deals valued at about $5 billion during a ceremony in Iowa to buy 12.53 million tons of U.S. soybeans and 371 tons of beef and pork.
