The death toll from the relentless deluge of torrential rain in the northern Kyushu region rose to 16 in Fukuoka and Oita prefectures on July 8, while 15 people remain missing or out of contact.
The number of evacuees in the two prefectures stands at around 1,700.

“deluge”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「大洪水、大水」とありました。LDOCEでは、“formal a large flood, or period when there is a lot of rain”と定義されています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』によると、“the Deluge”で「ノアの大洪水」を表すそうです。ちなみに、LDOCEでは第1義に“a large amount of something such as letters or questions that someone gets at the same time”と定義されており、「洪水」という意味以外には「大量」という意味で用いられることも多いようです。「大量」という意味で用いられる場合には、“a deluge of”という形でしばしば用いられるます。(Blue Sky)
