500 fire ants and 2 queens found in first batch, ministry says

The first batch of fire ants to be discovered in Japan numbered more than 500 individuals, including two queen ants, the Environment Ministry announced July 5.

The alien species, which can be deadly, has been found in Japan at four locations to date. The first discovery was in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, in late May, followed by findings in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Yatomi, Aichi Prefecture, and Osaka, within a little over a month.
