FUKUOKA--The Meteorological Agency warned of torrential rain in 16 municipalities across Fukuoka Prefecture on July 5 after a typhoon made the season's first landfall the previous day.

見出しで使われている「torrential rain」を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第3版、三省堂)で“torrential”を引いてみたところ、「急流の(ような)；急流の作用で生じた」とありました。LDOCEでは“torrential rain”で載っており、“very heavy rain”と定義されています。日本語では「豪雨」に当たる表現です(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。インターネットで検索してみても“torrential rain”とセットで定義されていることが多く、合わせて使われるのが基本なのかもしれません。(Blue Sky)
