“stipulate”を取り上げたいと思います。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(条件として)…を規定[明記、要求]する」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“if an agreement, law, or rule stipulates something, it must be”と定義されています。ちなみに、“stipulate”はラテン語の“stipultus”「正式の契約を要求する」を語源としているそうです。(Blue Sky)
