“acclimatize”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「«新しい風土・環境・状況などに»順応する、慣れる«to»」とありました。“acclimate”という形で『ウィズダム英和辞典』には載っていましたが、同義語であるそうです。また、LDOCEでは“to become used to a new place, situation, or type of weather, or to make someone become used to it”と定義されています。“acclimate”の方を見るとわかりやすいのですが、この単語の中には「気候、状況」を意味する“climate”が含まれています。接頭辞の“ac-”は“ad-”の異形で、「変化」を付加します。これらのワードを知っていれば、“acclimate”の「順応する」という意味は容易に予想できると思います。(Blue Sky)
