Hakuho has flawless finish in Tokyo
Yokozuna Hakuho finished off a flawless run at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday with a bout that seemed to symbolize his one-year drought without an Emperor’s Cup.
Hakuho had his moments of trepidation, but endured every move fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji tried on him in a lengthy battle that ended action at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.

“drought”を取り上げます。「干ばつ」という意味でよく知られている単語ですが、今回の記事では異なる意味で用いられています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「欠乏」とありました。確認のためにMerriam-Websterを引いたところ、“a prolonged or chronic shortage or lack of something expected or desired”と定義されていました。Merriam-Websterの定義によると、長い期間の欠乏を表現する際に用いられる単語であるようです。今回の記事でも１年間という長い期間優勝を逃していたことを表現するために用いられています。(Blue Sky)
