　２３日にイギリスのマンチェスターにあるライブ会場で爆発事件がありました。この事件を受け、イギリスはテロの警戒レベルを上げることを発表しました。

　“imminent”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈(悪い)事が〉今にも起こりそうな、差し迫った」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“an event that is imminent, especially an unpleasant one, will happen very soon”と定義されています。今回の表現の語源はラテン語の“imminēns”「突き出る，差し迫る」にあります。突出して状態が悪い、というところから「（悪いことが）今にも起こりそう」という意味が生まれたのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
