Kunimasu trout nearly home after 70 years

Kunimasu trout (see below), a species of trout once indigenous to Tazawako lake in Senboku, Akita Prefecture, are now living near the lake — if not quite in it — for the first time in about 70 years.

The species belongs to the Salmonidae family and is a relative species of kokanee. Before the fish died off in Tazawako, the trout were caught as a high-grade food fish. In the wake of the discovery of a transplanted population of the fish inhabiting Saiko Lake, the species’ categorization in the Environment Ministry’s red list was changed from being “extinct” to being “extinct in the wild.”
