Princess Mako visited the special exhibition Treasures of the Natural World on Monday in Tokyo, her first official duty following the news of her planned engagement.

The princess will become engaged to a fellow student from her university days. She viewed the exhibits with her parents, Prince Akishino and his wife, Kiko, at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Taito Ward, Tokyo.

　見出しにある “take in” を取り上げます。take inには「〜を理解する、のみ込む」「〜を吸収する」などの意味がありますが、今回はどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究者）で調べると、3つ目に「（主に米）（名所、映画館など）を（ふと）訪ねる、（映画など）を見に行く」とありました。観光地や名所などを訪れ、「この間は〜へ行ってきたんだよ。」と言いたいときに役立つ表現だと思いました。LDOCEには “to visit a place while you are in the area” と定義されています。

　その他にも「（衣服などの）幅を詰める」、「（…）を（家などに）受け入れる、泊める」といった意味もあり、難しい動詞を使わずとも１つの句動詞でこれだけのことを表すのだなと、意味の幅広さを感じました。（aqua）
