U.S. president signs order to upgrade cyber defense

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to bolster the government’s cyber security and protect critical infrastructure from cyberattacks, marking his first significant action to address what he has called a top priority.

The order seeks to improve the often-maligned network security of U.S. government agencies, from which foreign governments and other hackers have pilfered millions of personal records and other forms of sensitive data in recent years.

　“pilfer” /pílfɚ/ を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(…を)くすねる、こそどろする、ちょろまかす(steal)」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to seal something that are not worth much, especially from the place where you work”と定義されています。
