bioluminescence 復習

　神奈川県鎌倉市の由比ケ浜周辺で夜光虫が大量発生し、海が青白く光る現象が起こりました。

Kamakura’s red sea turns eerie blue at night as plankton invade

A blue bioluminescence in the waters off the popular Yuigahama beach gave off a supernatural glow on the night of May 6 here, to the amazement of spectators.

The otherworldly phenomenon was caused by an invasion of noctiluca plankton in the waters of Sagami Bay.

Earlier that day, a broad swath of red tide formed off the beach, which was caused by the mass generation of noctiluca and other species of plankton.

　bioluminescence /bάɪoʊlùːmənésns/ を取り上げます。生物に関連するbioと光に関係するluminescenceとが合わさってできています。手持ちの紙辞書には記載がありませんでしたが、スマートフォンに内蔵されているジーニアス英和辞典MX増補版で調べると「生物発光（海洋生物やホタルにみられる）、その光」とありました。luminescenceだけでは「ルミネッセンス、無熱光、冷光」の意味があり、熱を伴わない光のことをさします。

　Merriam-Websterには “the emission of light from living organisms (such as fireflies, dinoflagellates, and bacteria) as the result of internal, typically oxidative chemical reactions; also : the light so produced” と定義されています。

　夜光虫はルシフェリンという発光物質を持っていて、波打ち際や砂浜にぶつかるとその刺激によって光るそうです。（aqua）
