　愛媛県警今治署捜査本部が参考人として任意で事情聴取した３０代の女性が５日、自殺しているのが見つかりました。

Ehime woman kills herself after 5 hours of police questioning

IMABARI, Ehime Prefecture--A woman in her 30s on May 5 committed suicide hours after police here questioned her on a voluntary basis in connection with a fatal stabbing.

Police in Ehime Prefecture were investigating the death of an elderly woman and an attack on her son at their home in public housing in Imabari that might be related to another slaying a few days earlier.

Police questioned the woman for about five hours on May 4 and allowed her to return to her family around 11 p.m. The woman lived in Imabari, but did not go home. She spent the evening with her family elsewhere.

When police arrived to pick her up around 9 a.m. on May 5 for further questioning, they found the woman dead. She left a suicide note, the contents of which were not disclosed.

　“suicide note”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(自殺者の)遺書」とありました。ちなみに、一般的な遺言は“will”と表現されます。LDOCEでは“a legal document that says who you want your money and properly to be given to after you die”と定義されていました。“will”は未来を表現する助動詞としてよく知られている表現ですが、名詞では「意志、願望」という意味を持ちます。「遺言」は自分の願望を他のものに伝えるものなので、この“will”という単語で表現されるのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
