Luxury sleeper train goes into service

The Train Suite Shiki-Shima luxury sleeper operated by East Japan Railway Co. went into service with some fanfare on Monday with Japan now into its Golden Week holiday period.

At 11:40 a.m., Shiki-Shima left Tokyo’s Ueno Station for a four-day, three-night tour of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region.

The train has only 17 cabins, all suites, and all tickets for the first train were sold by lottery due to high demand.

　fanfare /ˈfæn.fer/ を取り上げます。日本語でもカタカナでファンファーレということばを聞いたことがありましたが、どのようなものなのかはっきりとは分かっていませんでした。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみると、「（音楽）ファンファーレ（華やかなトランペット（など）の合奏）」とありました。

　LDOCEには “a short loud piece of music played on a trumpet to introduce an important person or event” という意味の他にも “a lot of activity, advertising, or discussion relating to an event” と定義されています。

　語源をOnline Etymology Dictionaryで調べてみると、諸説あるようですが、その中の1つに “c. 1600, "a flourish sounded on a trumpet or bugle," from French fanfare "a sounding of trumpets" (16c.),” とあり、フランス語でトランペットの音という意味からきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
