A Hokkaido squirrel stands in a garden filled with blue and purple flowers at a shrine in Urausu, Hokkaido. The flowers there, including dogtooth violets, are known as “spring fairies.” The flora and fauna attract many photographers. The peak of the spring flowers continues until around the end of April. Squirrel sightings, however, depend on one’s luck, a town official said.

　“dogtooth violet” を取り上げます。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「[植]カタクリ」とありました。これは特定の色ではなく, ユリ科の花を指しています。Merriam-Webster.comには “any of a genus (Erythronium) of small spring-flowering bulbous herbs of the lily family” と定義されていました。 “violet” は本来, 植物の「スミレ」を意味しますが, ここでは花びらが犬歯に似た「青紫」のユリであることを表現していると考えられます。(Cayu)
