backlashを取り上げます。lashには「むちで打つ」や「人に非難を浴びせる」といった意味がありますが、backがつくとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「激しい反動（反発）（社会的、政治的改革などに対する）（against）」という意味が見つかりました。記事では “a backlash for showing the video of the Cleveland killing” と述べられており、先週にも人が射殺される映像が投稿され、激しい反発の声が上がっていたことがわかります。
