encounter n. の別な用法

　日本代表MF香川真司の所属するドルトムントのチームバスを狙った事件ですが，速報で用いられたencounterという単語の用法が気になりました。

　encounterは，動詞「〔偶然・思いがけなく〕出合う、出くわす」，さらにその名詞である「〔思いがけない〕出会い」という意味でよく知られていると思います。
　個人的には，スピルバーグ監督の「未知との遭遇」（Close Encounters of the Third Kind）で覚えた単語です。
　しかしここでは，あきらかにサッカーの欧州選手権という文脈のなかで用いられていますので，（試合での）「対決」という意味であるとあたりをつけました。ネットの辞書で確認しますと，"an occasion when two teams play against each other"と定義され，In their last encounter with Italy, England won 3–2.という例文がありました <蛇足ですが，この例文からはやはりイングランド贔屓のものでさすがサッカー，いや，フットボール発祥の地としての意地のようなものが感じられます...>。

　試合の場合は，「偶然・思いがけなく」というニュアンスが含まれますが，サッカーのトーナメントも最初は抽選，その後は試合結果で組まれますので，encounterの本義は踏襲されているのかなと思った次第です。（Super Blue Sky）
