It turns out that lovebirds aren’t entirely stupid.

Yes, they often spend too much on their weddings. But they aren’t as profligate with their bridal expenses as some bankers would like.

If they were, perhaps Promise Financial would still be making loans to finance wedding dresses and cakes and bad DJs. This relatively young firm was offering to make unsecured loans of around $10,000, typically for weddings, and charged interest rates that went up to nearly 30 percent.

But it stopped making loans at the end of January, according to a Bloomberg News article on Friday by Matt Scully. Instead, it’s changed its name to DigiFi and will provide technology to bigger banks.

 lovebirdを取り上げます。鳥を人に例えた表現のようですが、どのような人のことをさしているのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版 研究社)で調べると、「1ぼたんいんこ(雌雄がとても仲がよい) 2(複数形で、こっけいに)仲良しカップル、おしどり夫婦」とありました。
 LDOCEには “a small brightly coloured parrot” の他に、lovebirdsで “two people who show by their behaviour that they love each other very much – used humorously” と定義されています。
 画像を検索してみると、とてもカラフルな鳥であることがわかりました。いくつか種類があり、黄色や緑色が体の大半を占めるものや、羽が青色のものなど、目を引く色合いのものが多いように思われます。アフリカ原産とのことです。(aqua)
