“spring cleaning” を取り上げます。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べたところ, 「(春季)大掃除」とありました。つまり, 日常の清掃を表しているのではないことがわかります。The Free Dictionary.comには “a thorough cleaning, especially of a residence when winter is over” と定義されていました。これは「スプリング・クリーニング」と呼ばれ, 欧米で春先に行う大掃除を指すそうです。日本では「煤掃き」という年中行事から, 正月前に汚れを一掃するのが一般的とされていますが, 欧米では作業時の気候などを考慮した観点から, このような慣習になっていると考えられます。(Cayu)
