今回取り上げる表現は、見出しにある“somber”/sάmbɚ/です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「〈人・表情・気持ちなどが〉深刻な、憂鬱な」とありました。また、LDOCEでは、“sad and serious”と定義されています。
“somber”の語源は、フランス語の“sombrer”「陰にする」という表現だそうです(「goo辞書」)。英語の“somber”にも「〈色などが〉ぼんやりした ;〈場所などが〉薄暗い;〈服装などが〉地味な」という意味があります。憂鬱な気持ちを暗いと表現することは日本語でもありますが、“somber”も同じように使われている表現なのではないかと思います。
