Samurai Japan took a big step toward advancing to the final round of the World Baseball Classic after scraping out an 8-6 victory over the Netherlands in an 11-inning thriller of their second-round opener on Sunday night at Tokyo Dome.
After the Netherlands tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sho Nakata delivered a two-run single in the top of 11th. Under special WBC tie-breaking rules, each team starts the 11th inning with runners on first and second and no outs.

今回取り上げる表現は、“scrape out”です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、“scrape A out [out A]”で「A〈中の物〉をかき[すくい]出す」とありました。
“scrape”には「〈勝利・合格など〉を苦労して得る」という意味があります。今回は野球の記事なので、「勝利をつかみ取る」という意味になるのだと思います。「かき出す」という意味から、点数を苦労して重ねていったという意味を含んでいるのではないかと思います。(Blue Sky)
