Jane Austen poisoned with arsenic? Not so fast, experts say

CNN)Three antiquated pairs of spectacles displayed in the British Library are causing pulses to flutter clear across the globe.
Legendary author Jane Austen was poisoned with arsenic, proposed Sandra Tuppen, lead curator of Modern Archives & Manuscripts 1601-1850 at the British Library, in a blog post Thursday.
However, many scholars and medical experts say this theory is bunk, more crime fiction than plausible truth.

　“bunk”が気になったのでLDOCEで調べると“bunkum”とも言い、“nonsense”のやや古い言い方であることがわかりました。
　『英辞郎 on the web』によると“bumkum”はノースカロライナ州のBuncombe郡という地名だそうです。1820年の下院議会でFelix Walkerという人が「演説は自分の出身地であるBuncombeのためだ」と、自身のつまらない演説に対していったことから、「でたらめ、たわごと」の意味合いを持つようになったそうです。
　オースティンが生きていた19世紀前半のイングランドの飲料水にヒ素が混入していたことが多かったことからこのような見解が生まれたそうです。研究によると、ヒ素が死因とは断定できないようです。(flyingbird)
