　宮城県亘理町で一斉にいちご狩りをする人数のギネス記録に挑戦するイベントが開かれました。

Strawberry pickers set a record

A total of 1,141 people picked strawberries together on March 5 in an event in Miyagi Prefecture to promote a postdisaster revival of local strawberry farmers, setting a new Guinness World Record.

The Miyagi towns of Watari and Yamamoto were the biggest production centers of strawberries in the Tohoku northeastern region until a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, 2011.

Due to the tsunami, 95 percent of the local land for strawberry farming was damaged. To rebuild the industry, the towns set up 191 greenhouses with the support from the central government in 2013, paving the way for the full resumption of strawberry shipments from the towns.

The day’s event, sponsored by the Watari government, took place in one of the greenhouses. Guinness World Records recognized that the 1,141 people set a world record by picking strawberries en masse.

　“pave the way for” を取り上げます。paveには道路などを舗装するという意味があります。 “pave the way for” は直訳で考えると道を舗装するイメージがわきますが、『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）によると「…への道を開く、…の準備をする」という意味になります。
　LDOCEには “pave the way for something” で “to make a later event or development possible by producing the right conditions” と定義されています。
記事の内容に戻りますと、国による支援でいちごの本格的な出荷に向けて準備を進めてきたことが伺えます。挑戦の結果、1141人が一斉にいちごを収穫したと認定され、ギネス記録を達成しました。（aqua）
